What’s happening in the market?
The biggest change in the mortgage market is the unprecedented increase in interest rates. About three weeks ago, we saw a rate increase of over 1% within a week – the most dramatic increase Amanda has ever seen. Essentially, the Federal Reserve is trying to counteract the inflation we’ve seen as a result of COVID stimulus checks and other government programming. Interest rate fluctuations are not unusual, but such dramatic shifts have dramatic consequences.
What does mean for 2022 buyers?
Unfortunately, Amanda shared that rates will not be slowing down.
If you have already spoken with a lender and received a mortgage plan, Amanda urges you to reach back out to them and get your plan updated. With rates increasing, you may not be able to afford the same home as you could a month ago. Communicating with both your lender and your agent during the home search process is necessary in order to ensure you are still qualified to purchase the homes you are viewing.
