This week on My Greenville Home Radio, Dan is speaking with Jeannette Tinkey, co-owner of Blue Moon Estate Sales of Greenville. Jeannette along with her husband Jonathon formed Blue Moon Estate Sales of Greenville in 2017, one of 60 Blue Moon franchises around the United States. Today, Jeannette shares more about how her business works and the benefits of shopping estate sales.
What is an estate sale?
An estate sale allows clients to liquidate the many things they have in their homes, recycling them to new owners. Many people associate estate sales with quirky items like a large doll collection, but Jeannette and Jonathon’s sales include tons of everyday items like power tools, extension cords, kitchen items, high-quality rugs, and more.
What is Blue Moon’s ideal client?
Jeannette and Jonathon work with a lot of couples who are downsizing. Some of their clients sort through their belongings, choosing what to sell and what to keep. Many choose to get rid of everything and completely start over! As you would expect, many of Jeannette and Jonathon’s clients have experienced a death in the family and are looking for an efficient way to work through their departed family member’s belongings. Finally, couples going through a divorce often take advantage of Jeannette and Jonathon’s services, using an estate sale to quickly divide and get rid of any unwanted belongings.
What should clients do to prepare for an estate sale?
After calling Blue Moon and speaking with Jeannette and Jonathon, the next step is to remove any personal items from the home. Medicine bottles, bills, or anything containing personal information should either be removed from the home or added to a sectioned off room. The same must be done with any items the client plans on keeping. Next, Jennette and Jonathon visit the home and begin setting up the clients belongings to sell. Taking into account local trends, inflation, and their expert knowledge of antique and vintage décor value, the couple will accurately price everything in the home and get to selling for you!
What are some local trends and popular estate sale items?
Item value changes from region to region depending on what is popular. Here in the Upstate, Asian inspired décor is very sought after, as well as mid-century modern. As far as individual items go, rugs sell very quickly, as do kitchen dining sets. Many times a new college student will furnish their apartment kitchen or a DIYer will purchase an old piece of furniture and give it new life.
Buyers typically avoid large floral motifs associated with the 80s and early 90s, however, Jeannette mentioned these styles are slowing becoming popular again.
