Today on My Greenville Home Radio, Dan spoke with May Brandy Amidon of Travelers Rest. Mayor Amidon is both the first female mayor and the youngest mayor in town’s history. She has served a collective 12 years of service on TR’s Council and is a founding member of Let’s Keep TR Beautiful, an organization dedicated to the beautification of TR through education and action. Outside of her public service, Brandy a wife and mother as well as Co-President and CFO of Brains on Fire, Inc., a local creative agency. Today, Mayor Amidon is sharing her passion for TR and the exciting things in store for the blooming town.
Mayor Amidon grew up in TR and has experienced the town’s growth first-hand. At one point, Travelers Rest was nothing more than that – a traveler’s pass through!
Mayor Amidon’s interest in public service began in her 20’s when, after sharing her curiosity with her husband, she attended her first council meeting and never looked back. Since then, Mayor Amidon as served 8 years on city council and 4 as mayor, having just been re-elected for her second 4-year team last week. Mayor Amidon together with her nonpartisan council at large work hard to preserve the natural beauty of TR while creating a town for all to enjoy.
The rapid growth experienced in recent years has not caught her team by surprise; Mayor Amidon and the Council have been working for nearly ten years to build the infrastructure necessary to launch TR and the surrounding area. TR’s Main Street is a beautiful bikeable, walkable lane thriving with local business, and the Council has plans to replicate the successful street-scaping on the adjacent Poinsett Corridor. With expansions such as these, planning is key. Pacing with growth is one challenge; hearing your local constituents’ concerns is another. Mayor Amidon values a sense of community and connectedness in Travelers Rest and infuses her plans with it.
