Blazing hot in the day and freezing cold in the morning…South Carolina fall has begun and people all over Greenville are preparing. Porches are covered in bright mums and pumpkins, costumes are being bought and created for Halloween next week, and seasonal drinks are being enjoyed. Fall preparation for a homeowner looks a little different though. Today on My Greenville Home Radio, Dan shares his fall home maintenance checklist designed to help you get your home ready for the colder months.
When you go to sell your home, often the most detrimental contributor to decreased home value is deferred maintenance. If you can take some time to repair and improve small things around your house before fall and especially winter, it will most definitely pay off down the road, both in your family’s quality of life in the home and your resale value should you choose to sell.
Prepare your outdoor space for the fall and winter months
Have a bad weather plan for your outdoor furniture. While not completely necessary, this will greatly extend the life of your furniture which, let’s face it, was probably a pretty serious investment. Give your furniture a good clean, invest in some waterproof cushions, and possibly make a space indoors available for the furniture in the event of especially nasty weather.
Dan just recently pressure washed his outdoor patio to remove grime and dirt buildup. The process left the area transformed and was the perfect seasonal reset.

Clean your gutters
Between summer pollen and fall foliage, gutters tend to get pretty clogged. Now is the perfect time to get things cleaned up, whether you brave the project yourself or hire a professional. Dan recently hired his friend Ben to clean his gutters and actually found a stuffed monkey in a drainpipe! Who knows why the monkey was there, but it serves as a great reminder of the importance of gutter maintenance.
Expert Tip: If you would like help cleaning out your gutters, Ben’s company does great work! Email Dan and he’d be happy to get you in touch with Ben.
HVAC maintenance
HVAC units have different maintenance needs depending on the model, but a good start is to clean the area around your unit. Any debris, branches, or leaves within two feet of your unit should be cleared. A more thorough cleaning can be delegated to a professional or tried on your own depending on how handy you are. Proper HVAC maintenance can increase your unit’s efficiency by up to 30%!
These are just three items on Dan’s Fall Home Maintenance checklist. To hear more home maintenance tips, personal stories, and real estate advice, listen to the whole episode.
