This week on My Greenville Home Radio, Dan is talking with Tori Cox, Owner and Head Coach of Firegem Cheer Academy, a competative cheer facility that began right here in Greenville.
Tori grew up in a small town where cheer was not an option. An avid gymnast, Tori used cheer to pursue her love of gymnastics at a collegiate level for the first time. Her coach, who was originally from Greenville, grew Tori’s love for cheer and really turned her into an athlete. The two worked together on and off for 7 years as Tori toured the US coaching cheer at 3 different universities. Finally, Tori moved to Greenville in 2019 and started Firegem in 2021.
Firegem is a “competitive, non-USASF cheer facility.” Tori explained that her gym’s goal is to teach children about competitive cheer, tumbling, and choreography in a safe, fun, and empowering environment. Holding independent competitions makes this mission possible. “The girls love competition days,” Tori explained, “They walk in in their sparkly costumes and get a gift right at the door before heading to meet their team.” Every aspect of the day is set up to make the girls feel special and have fun.
Children can start tumbling at Firegem as young as 4 years old, and students as old as 18 years old compete. In the year and a half since opening, Tori’s team has grown from 3 coaches to 16 and 3 small teams to 6 very large teams (and hopefully 2 more soon!). While many teams travel regionally to compete, there are team and class options that offer more schedule flexibility.
