Seasonal Home Organization with Lil O’Keefe

Today, Dan spoke with Lil O’Keefe, owner and operator of Anything But Chaos (ABC) Professionals. With over 25 years of industry experience, Lil has a passion for organizing and helping people. Lil’s goal with her work is not perfectionism but to create function and organization in her client’s homes and lives.

With Halloween only days away, the holiday season is officially upon us and for many, the holidays are a source of stress. From cleaning to seasonal organizing to preparing for guests, Lil has advice to help you navigate this time of year like a pro.

Start Now

Lil’s biggest piece of advice when it comes to holiday home prep is to start now.

Make a list of everything you need to clean, every large meal you need to prepare, and every space that needs to be decluttered. If you are not a natural list-maker, Lil suggests creating your list with a tactile display like a whiteboard, a calendar, or even just a sheet of paper. Divide your tasks into categories (home, food, business, family, etc.) so you can pick what you’d like to work on rather than keeping an overwhelming mental master list.

If you have the luxury of hiring a cleaning service, do that now and not a week before Thanksgiving. If you plan to clean yourself, avoid saving the whole task for a rainy Saturday and instead break up tasks and give yourself a set time in which to accomplish them. “When one cleans their own house, they get into a room and all the sudden they are distracted,” Lil warns, “People are too involved with the things in their own rooms.” Breaking up activities and giving yourself clear instructions helps you avoid distraction.

Enlist Help

No matter what task you are facing, Lil advises you to be open to accepting help.

If you are planning a large meal, your friends and family want to help! Delegate meal components to guests, or even just suggest they bring a game for the kids or a favorite drink. This can take stress away from you and make your guests feel involved. When you are cleaning, get your family involved. Even if they don’t clean everything perfectly, going behind them with touch ups is much easier for you than doing the whole thing yourself.

Even with an expert game plan, it is easy to feel overwhelmed. Fortunately, consultation is a huge part of Lil’s job as a professional organizer.

“I sit down with my clients and get a feel for their lifestyle, essentially shadowing them, to help determine what can they do to improve how they are attacking different goals,” Lil explains, “Very often, it just takes me going in and showing them how to break down their schedule.”
