How a Dress Can Help Fight Human Trafficking

This week on My Greenville Home, Dan is talking with Ashley Cousins, Digital Marketing Specialist at Hamilton & Co. about the Dressember Foundation, an anti-human trafficking organization that uses a unique challenge to advocate and fundraise every December. Ashley has participated in the Dressember challenge for the last 5 years, raising over $2,000 to fight human trafficking in the process.

What is human trafficking? Where does this problem exist?

Human trafficking involves the use of force, fraud, or coercion to obtain some type of labor or commercial sex act. This definition is broad. It encompasses the exploitation of men, women, and children of all ages. The most commonly considered criminal trafficking act is sex trafficking (think Liam Neeson’s Taken). Some lesser known examples are forced marriage, child soldiers, and debt bondage.

Over 40 million men, women and children are trafficked every year around the world. This is not an issue just in developing countries or in other countries far away from us. People are trafficked right here in the US and right here in Greenville

What is the Dressember Foundation?

Dressember is an international organization based out of Los Angeles, CA that has decided to take a stand against human trafficking. For the entire month of December, advocates wear either a dress or a tie every single day as a conversation starter and a small sacrifice of freedom for those who have none.

Since 2013, Dressember has raised over $13M to fight human trafficking! Funds go to a lot of different organizations tackling different aspects of the human trafficking problem regionally, nationally, and internationally. Some types of services your funds assist are the literal salvation of victims, rehabilitation and therapy for survivors, and legal fees and support for survivors.

How can I get involved?

Ashley shared that the single most important thing you can do to get involved is to educate yourself and share what you learn with others. “Human trafficking thrives in darkness, and when we shed a light on injustice, we can help stop it,” she explained. Visit Dressember.org to learn more about this issue and share with a friend.

If you are interested in supporting this important cause monetarily, donating is easy! Visit Ashley’s fundraising page at Dressember2021.funraise.org to support (Paypal and Credit Card payments accepted). You can also donate directly to the campaign using Ashley’s Facebook Fundraiser.
